"Who was it said Earthmen never invite their ancestors round to dinner?"
"These shoes! They fit perfectly!"
"Mother, mother, shall I die? Yes my darling, by and by..."
"An apple a day keeps the... Ah, never mind."
"It is not common or garden flex, ...! This is Tardis machinery. It needs a time-space link. Now plug them back!"
"Nevermore a butterfly."
"...always take a banana to a party, .... Bananas are good."
"That won't last; he's gay and she's an alien."
"Statistics, my dear, merely allow one to be wrong with accuracy."
"It's rather a pity, in a way. Now the universe is down to 699 wonders." |

hmm, well I can only do 2 of them...
The 2nd quote is from the Eighth Doctor in the telemovie.
The 8th quote was spoken by Doc No 9 - although what story I have no idea!! |

Martin :
"Who was it said Earthmen never invite their ancestors round to dinner?"
|
That would be Douglas Adams in the Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy, in reference to Man being descended from Apes.

Off the top of my head without looking at any books, videos or DVDs, I'd say the quotes are from the following sources:
2nd quote: 8th Doctor in the telemovie 3rd quote: 4th Doctor in Robot 4th quote: 5th Doctor in Kinda 7th quote: 10th Doctor in The Girl in the Fireplace 8th quote: 9th doctor in Rose 9th quote: 2nd Doctor speaking to Zoe 10th quote: 3rd Doctor in Death to the Daleks
Ok, so that's without looking at Dr Who any books, DVDs or VHS....how'd I go, Moderator? |

Too impresive, next round's more obscure...
2.1 "... was designed to have a negative failure rate!"
2.2 "Unlimited rice pudding!"
2.3 "There is and there will always be 110 missing episodes."
2.4 "Doctor Who is required. Bring him here."
2.5 "Friend? Friend? Bike?"
2.6 "Ten million years of absolute power. That's what it takes to be really corrupt!"
2.7 "The memory cheats."
2.8 "Nuzzing in ze world can schtop me now!"
2.9 "Don't shoot, ...! You could hit my car!"
2.10 "Star Wars is adolescent nonsense; Close Encounters is obscurantist drivel; Star Trek can turn your brains to purée of bat guano; and the greatest science fiction series of all time is Doctor Who! And I'll take you all on, one-by-one or all in a bunch to back it up!"
And here's the indeterminate ones again...
1.1 "Who was it said Earthmen never invite their ancestors round to dinner?"
1.5 "It is not common or garden flex, ...! This is Tardis machinery. It needs a time-space link. Now plug them back!"
1.6 "Nevermore a butterfly." |

Right. Cop this.
3.1 “Doctor Who. A frail old man lost in space and time. They give him this name because they don’t know who he is.”
3.2 "December 11 1965...[the production office] receives a phonecall from MGM's studios... [where] 2001: A Space Odyssey, is in production...the Visual Effects team...are intrigued by the Doctor Who crew's achievements, both in the illusion of weightlessness...and in matter transportation...Curiously enough, when 2001 is eventually released in 1967, permutations of those same techniques, pioneered by Camfield in Doctor Who, are clearly in evidence."
3.3 “Dr. Who’s giving away drugs! Look It’s Dr. Who, offering a set of six super acid trips!”
3.4 “The natural extent of moral relativism is Sutekhs' ‘your evil is my good’ speech. According to popular university-think, I guess the Doctor should have invited Sutekh over for tea, and practice destroying some life to experience his culture.”
3.5 “In Deadly Assassin the Time Lords seem to have forgotten the Doctor yet we’re led to believe it’s very rare for a Time Lord to leave Gallifrey. So they should remember him, particularly as in Three Doctors he saved Gallifrey (and the universe of course!) from destruction and Borusa said they needed heroes...Then there’s the more than usually daft title. Have you ever heard of an assassin that isn’t deadly?...The new rule for Doctor Who is that anything pre-Holmes needn’t exist, which can’t be good for a script editor. What must have happened was that at the end of ‘Hand of Fear’ the Doctor was knocked out and had a crazy mixed up nightmare about Gallifrey. WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO THE MAGIC OF DOCTOR WHO?”
3.6 "‘These zealots have offended against the laws of Rome and our Emperor,' the Doctor called out across the massed ranks of legionaries. He waited briefly for the buzz of excitement to die down before continuing. 'The gods will surely punish them for their temerity, turning flames of righteous anger on those Jewish rebels. And I can promise you this- tomorrow, Masada will fall and the long siege will be over.'"
3.7 “Dr. Who: Chilling Science-fiction Series of exploits in a time machine: ABC-TV The National Television Service: Tuesdays at 7.30”
3.8 “‘There it is!’ he snapped. ‘That’s the cause of the trouble!’ And he pointed to it with his shot gun...the nervous tension was infectious - causing the Doctor to jump in his turn, whereupon both barrels exploded. The first shot caught Curly Bill in the diaphragm, the second brought Frank McLowry drifting lead-like to the street before them, in a shower of broken glass...”
3.9 “If The Daleks’ Master Plan were released on video tomorrow, how would fandom deal with it?”
3.10 “Reduce considerably shots of...being attacked by clawed creature, also reduce sound of her cries.”
And the ungotten...
2.1 "... was designed to have a negative failure rate!"
2.5 "Friend? Friend? Bike?"
2.7 "The memory cheats."
2.8 "Nuzzing in ze world can schtop me now!"
2.9 "Don't shoot, ...! You could hit my car!"
1.1 "Who was it said Earthmen never invite their ancestors round to dinner?"
1.5 "It is not common or garden flex, ...! This is Tardis machinery. It needs a time-space link. Now plug them back!"
1.6 "Nevermore a butterfly." |

2.7 The Memory Cheats - this is the infamous quote by JNT during a 1980s fan convention.
He was right though - I kept on remembering that some of the McCoy stories were great, but then I saw them and thought 'now that was the only pearl of wisdom from JNT that was actually true!" |

Axelf: Full marks--1.2, 2.7. Half--1.8, 2.8.
And yes, JNT said it in relation to how good fans claimed the B&W era was compared to his reign--although it's equally applicable to him...
Zaphod: Full--2.2, 2.3, 2.4, 2.6, 2.10. Half--1.1.
This last being a bit tricky; a quote of a quote.
Jimmy: Full--1.2, 1.3 1.4, 1.7, 1.8, 1.10. Half: 1.9.
Way out in front there!
Terry: nice try! |

OK, so my answer for 1.1 wasn't quite complete.
The character saying this, is actually the book. The Hitch Hikers guide to the galaxy.
