Peter Luck's book 50 years of Australian television : an insider's view 1956-2006 seems quite authoritative. While he hasn't worked in TV that long himself, it is largely drawn from his own memory and photographic collection.

One strange anomaly is an image of John Logie Baird "visiting Australia in 1956"--a decade after he passed away! Presumably this is from the 1938 radio convention he was known to have attended, and Luck's only got the date wrong.
