Subject: Out of production imporvements

I'm interested in listing all the things which got better for fandom when Doctor Who was out of production.
Radio Plays.
First suggested in the '60s (with Peter Cushing), the first of these, Slipback, was made in the 1985 gap. Following the show's disaperance in 1990, there were two more, The Paradise of Death and The Ghosts of N-Space. Then the webcasts from 2001; Death Comes to Time, Real Time, Scream of the Shalka and Shada.
Original Fiction.
Prior to the Virgin novels, there was only the comics, strips, odd text stories in annuals and TV Radio Times. Without the TV production, the novels came into their own.
Doctor Who Magazine.
While it's been around in different forms since the '70s, without new production it turned a more critical eye on the first 26 seasons.
Fandom.
Possibly coincidental, but at the same time the show ceased fandom went semi-pro in it's publications, at least in Australia.
Any more? |

I whish I'd imporved my spelling there!
Let's also examine the developments from production eras.
Original fiction.
Such as it was. Annuals, comics, DWM and TV Radio Times text stories. K-9 and Other Mechanical Marvels.
Audio adventures.
The Pescatons. It may have been a one off, but it counts. There was the LP of Genesis of the Daleks, and video releases in other media, in this case VHS, Betamax and laser disc.
Fandom itself.
Both The Official William Hartnell Fan Club and the Doctor Who Fan Club (?sp) go back the the 1960s. Neither survived the decade, but consider that before takeing any current club's claim seriously!

Most of the current fanzines are semi-pro; there's not that much difference between them and what you get on news stands. The best example for what fanzines used to look like is the Zerinza reproduction in the current Data Extract; a work of love in both the producing and reading! |
