Subject:  Wanted - Opinions - Anime

19/10/2006 05:10 GMT

Hi People,

How are you all?

Man been so busy on the garden!!!! Why are holidays more busy than work days? AHHHHH!!!

Anyway, I was looking at purchasing some Anime DVDs. Does anyone out there watch any Anime? Does anyone have any suggestions on some good ones.

So far I have got Starblazer Series 2 (if anyone can remember that) and Ghost in the Shell.

Any other good ones? Anyone seen that Neon Genesis?

Cheers

Neon Gensis is OK, but my taste runs more towards Astroboy and Kimba. Spirited Away is the best anime movie I've seen. If translations's a factor stay away from 4Kids, the mutilators of all things Japanese.

I loved Astroboy as a kid, that was a great anime.

But the one I enjoyed the most was Battle of the Planets - now that was fantastic.

I've got a couple of the eps on dvd, where they have both versions of the same show.

One ep has the uncut Japanese version, then the next is the same show done in the U.S.

If you've never seen this show, I would recommend you see it, its great!

Now I realise this show isnt Anime - but I loved Monkey as well.  I could drone on for hours about Tripitaka and co !!!!!!

Sandy Frank did a great thing in buying Battle of the Planets, and then a not so great thing in the translation for US viewers. I feel much the same about Recovery--thanks for repeating Monkey, but as for what they did to it...!

I agree - after seeing the Japanese version of Battle of the Planets, I much prefer that now over the US one.

I have very fond memories of watching that show, as with Monkey as well.

I too disliked Recovery tinkering with the episodes when they showed them.

Although what I can't get over now is that they've remade Monkey with new actors in it!!!  A scandal I say!!!

I don't think we can complain--it wasn't original to Japanese TV  in the '70s, after all!--but that treatment of it is pretty influential.

Has anyone seen the fourth year episodes?

I am rather impressed by Vampire Hunter D, especially the movie Bloodlust.

This rather a more modern  Anime late 1990s.

I grew up and liked the 60's shows.

Marine Boy

Space Ace

Prince Planet

Eighth Man

I haven't seen the fourth year episodes yet, atlhough I understand that it doesn't tie up any loose ends unfortunately.

For what its worth (very little!) - I preferred the first actor who played Pigsy rather than the 2nd.

Also, I've just read that a CGI Battle of the Planets movie is in the works - I'd definately love to see that for sure.

The final batch come at the bottom of fan polls--and that's probably why Worldwide Sound didn't bother dubbing them! I suspect the rise of Buddist tenets and decline of violence in the  third year continued, making for thoughtful but somewhat less fun episodes.

Marine Boy was repeated as recently as the mid 90s. Space Ace was last see in the early 80s, and Prince Planet in the 70s. I've never seen Eighth Man!

The Space Ace in the 80s, was an American one. Different to the 60's one I saw.

I wish saw Marine Boy, but I missed it, must have been on saturday mornings, whilst i slept.

Marine Boy repeats were on Sunday mornings--I slept thourgh them myself!

I was thinking of Space Angel; this and Clutch Cargo were repeated in the early '80s.
