We were talking about this at the last pub meeting; I gave up on Asterix when Rene Goscinny died, but Brenton still collects them and has the latest volume.

Okay on the 2006 Trailer on bbc its great the whole idea with evil cat women, matrix ninjas and the dr squeezing through a mincer but the worst thing was that dry voiceover at the end! :|

Jimmy is Tennants No. 1 fan I can see that!!!

Paul McGann deserves to turn up in the new series though.  Would love to see what his Dr could have been capable off, even if it is with a pairing with Doc 10

I wouldn't say that I'm Tennant's number one fan, but I loved "The Christmas Invasion" and breathed a great sigh of relief when I saw Tennant's performance, because I had great doubts as to whether he was a good choice. seeing him in action set my mind at rest.....but he has a long way to go before I'll ever say I like him as much as Jon Pertwee or Tom Baker.

> What I can say without any shadow of doubt was that he was a damn good choice, "The Christmas Invasion" rocked, the trailers look fantastic, and Tennant's portrayal of the Doctor took off on a better start than any of his predecessors by far.......and if that's a sign of things to come, I think he may become a strong contender for matching the legacy of Pertwee and Tom Baker.

Would love to see tennant with Mc Gann - that would be an excellent combination.

Was never really very impressed with Eccleston (I know, burn in hell, Jimmy!) - he was just too angry and filled with attitude for me. Still, woo hoo!!! - I loved the stories anyway (except "Father's Day", "The Long Games" and "Boom Town")

I've expounded my theory on actors before: walking props the most of them. Unless they're very good or bad they're just a medium for the script to infect the audience.

I thought eh worst part of Remembrance was the Doctor talking the Dalek to death; and then Sylvester only goes and takes full credit for writing this scene at Inside the Tardis!

I agree Jimmy - Eccelston was good, but he didn't really seem 'comfortable' in the role.

He was a bit hard to like at times, and too 'rough around the edges' a bit.

But his stories were good, although I do agree that 'Father's Day' was a bit of a dodgy story - too sickly sweet for my liking.

Martin has made a very good point that should not be avoided, the actor is an empty vessel, needing to be filled by the narrative and script conceived by the writer.

.......but if that vessel is cracked or warped, the message will come out distorted or fragmented, so the actor needs to be Hermes, flying the message across the screen.

As for Eccleston, I dunno.

Was he uncomfortable, or was he just being 'devil's advocate', portaying a angry, attitude filled Doctor to bring in the 21st century audience (which can be generally described as an angry, attitude filled and individualistic epoch), and then make people ready for a more eccentric and alien Doctor that it seems we will be getting with Tennant?????

I think that they made the Eccleston doctor more 'edgy', to provide a counter-balance to the 'traditional view' of the 'warm caring' doctor types of the past.

But having done that, it seems that they have gone back to the 'warm' style for the Tennant doctor.

That's not to say that the Eccleston doctor wasn't good, far from it - but his edginess certainly made him stand out from the previous ones.

I agree David Tennant is THE Dr Who... He rocks.  Eccleston was edgy and a bit abrupt at times (see Father's Day when he goes off at Rose) but I think that that was to draw in the 2000's crowd and steer it away from the 70's softer Doctors.

I also agree that Father's Day was very sickly sweet.  I think perhaps it was an episode to get the girls to watch Dr Who... I suppose it was just like having that marfy Captain Jack and his defabricator! Another episode to lure the women folk.

Eccleston was fantastic!!!! He is what Doctor Who needed at this stage in it's lifecycle. An 'Ass Kicking, Pussy Hunting' Doctor.

I don't know if the series would have had the same WOW impact if it had started with Tennant rather than Eccleston.

All that said though, I am looking forward to seeing Tennant in the role. Now we have roped in the new viewers, we maybe able to convert them into accepting a more 'classic' style Doctor

Sneb's right. Eccleston was a pussy chasing, bad a** Doctor for the 21st century........BUT he was also eccentric, and 'coward before killer' as he finally told the Emperor Dalek in "The Parting of the Ways".

I think Eccleston was a strange mix of eccentric and anti - hero aggressive that was needed for a brief stint to lure the audiences in before the strange alieness of the Doctor could start to be shown. The 'classic' series of Dr Who has created a atereotype of actors with strange clothes, dorky personalities, mad professor nerds, and that would NOT have appealed to today's society.

> Eccleston was like NASAs Pioneer voyage, testing the boundaries of the show to see if the udea of Dr Who would work for this millenia. The message we got back was "YES!"

> Now Tennant is Voyager, going the 'whole 9 planets' and beyond, taking the character of The Doctor to realms that we old fans want (he's eccentric, dresses with bohemian style, and is dark without being too edgy like Eccleston), and also pleasing the new audiences by not being too nerdy, flirting like mad with rose, knowing how to fight like a Jedi and 'drop' politicians!

> Eccleston was edgy because he was playing The Doctor as both an eccentric character and an a** kicking maniac - these two sides of him made him a contradictory personality, possibly experiencing sensations of 'dissonance' - his character was VERY unstable....so much so that he made Colin Baker's seem placid!

I feel that Eccleston used the part of the Doctor just for the money because if you really liked the job you would have been there for at least another season
