From free to air TV last night:

The Look of Love...Casino Royalle (1967).

I don't know that song - and I really didn't like the 1960s version of Casino Royale.

How about this:

Film: The Big Lebowski

This song is psychedelic sixties rock performed by Kenny Rogers and the Limited Edition (before Rogers went country!)......and it's a bloody classic.
It was the perfect soundtrack to use when The Dude (Jeff Bridges) has his surreal fantasy bowling dream about Julianne Moore.

I meant more in a "successful songs commissioned for things which have gone on to be kind of obscure" way, but yes that's a good film and sequence.

The Big Lebowski was an excellent film from the Coen Brothers.  Jeff Bridges was perfect as 'The Dude'.  One of their best.

The 1967 version of Casino Royale was appalling, and not part of the official series thankfully.

It had a total of 5 directors and countless scriptwriters, one of whom was an uncredited Woody Allen.  Allen threatened to sue the producers of they ever admitted that he had a hand in the script!!

The new version of Casino Royale is great.

I know thats nothing to do with the thread, but I thought I'd put my two cents in somewhow!!

The Candy Man...Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971).

Commissioned as a tie in with Quaker Oats' Willy Wonka line, The Candy Man went on to become a standard. While the film isn't obscure, this song is the single most successful thing from it.

Send in the Clowns...A Little Night Music (1973).

Just another Sondheim tune in this Bergmanesque musical theatre piece, Send in the Clowns was siezed upon by artists as disparate as Frank Sinatra, Kenny Rogers and Count Basie, becoming Sondehim's only hit--the only thing in his career to rival this is Comedy Tonight from A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (1962).

I loved Blue Monn fom the Anerican Werewolf in London.

"Bad Moon Rising"? I`d always assumed this was an established song that was used in the film because of its` lyrics. Is that so?
But how about "Knockin`on Heavens Door" from Pat Garret & Billy The Kid. Though the film is a classic with the critics,I`m sure the "average Joe" is hardly aware of its existence.
(Trivia Note;"Everybody`s Talkin`" from Midnite Cowboy was destined to be Lay,Lady,Lay by Bob Dylan but he took too long coming up with the goods.)

Two good examples. Harry Nillson's famous as a song writer, yet his two biggest hits (Everybody's Talkin' and Without You) weren't written by him. Anyone seen The Point (1971)?

Back to Bacherach, who had a big hit with What's Up, Pussycat--unlike the film it was from...

I think we both might be right or wrong, because it could have been Van Morrisons Moon Dance?
