The first episode of the new series of Doctor Who was broadcast on BBC 1 at 19:00 GMT last night, 4:30 CST this morning in Australia.
The episode, Rose, has been welcomed with critical praise but some fan discontent. A technical problem had the sound of "loud cheering" and a man talking inadvertently transmitted. There has been intense interest in how the new show will rate, with book makers only evening the odds of Who winning in the last hours prior to the broadcast. It will be some time before official figures will be available.
The broadcast was followed by documentary Doctor Who Confidential on BBC Three.
The BBC has claimed victory in viewer ratings for the new series debut. They quote an average of 9.9 million viewers for Rose, against 7.2m viewers for the ITV rival.
