Robert Altman passed away at his Los Angeles home on Novemember 20 2006. He was 81.
Altman was renown as an anti-studio director, and consequently had difficulty in financing his projects. After five Academy nominations for Best Director, he was finally recognized with a Special Achievement award this year, probably in respect to his long battle with cancer. While his contribution to science fiction was limited to the down beat Countdown (1967), his attitude and style saw him lumped in with George Lucas and Steven Spielberg as part of "New Hollywood".
