RIP Vampira

Select news sources are reporting the death of Maila Nurmi .

Nurmi achieved fame as the Morticia Addams derived Vampira, inspiring a generation of horror hosts. After two years on KABC-TV she was left typecast and unemployed, leading to her notorious appearance in Plan 9 from Outer Space. In later life she turned this notoriety to her advantage, opening Vampira's Attic antique store and making jewelry.
Maila Nurmi was born in Finland in 1921, and died aged 86 on January 10 2008.

Is this the same person who tried to sue Cassandra Peterson (Elvira)  for ripping off her character?

Yes; note she in turn ripped off Charles Addams!
Contradicting the article in SFSA 13, apart from Plan Nine there is a film of her in character performing in character, although the provenance of the footage is disputed. Those promoting it claim it's a lost episode of The Vampira Show, however it appears to be a non-broadcast advert for the station.

Plan Nine was such a tacky film.

I remember seeing a screening of it at the Capri cinema, the audience kept on laughing right till the end!

Though I disagree with the critics who regard it as 'the worst film of all time'

I've seen far worse films than that one - at least Plan Nine was consistently entertaining.

Anyway, Vampira was an amusing part of the film, and along with Tor Johnson, made for a nice couple!!!!

RIP Vampira.
