Doctor Who composer passes
18/05/2008 08:51 GMT

Posted by Martin

Musician and composer Tristram Cary passed away in Adelaide on the 24th April 2008.

Mr Cary was interviewed by SFSA about his career and particularly his siginificant contribution to Doctor Who for Chameleon Factor several issues ago.

I'm sure we all would pass on our sincere condolences to his friends and family.

Dreadful news, we were talking about contacting him for an event only at the last meeting. I saw him at the launch of What the Future Sounded Like and I'm glad I didn't wait until the review was in print before I sent him a copy!

Bit of an obituary on ABC news this evening. Cary was credited with the music for The Ladykillers (with two clips), "the Hammer horror movies and Doctor Who" (with a clip of the TARDIS materialising from Spearhead from Space complete with Dudley Simpson score!). There were also a couple of clips of him "working" at home over a synthesizer and lecturing in a classroom. Love to know what that was file from!

Dedication to him at the end of Newstopia tonight...anyone seen any notable obituaries?

"They're decomposing composers...."

Seriously, this is a sad moment in time and indicative of the fact that the classic series members are in the twilight of their lives.

It is with great regret that we acknowledge the passing away of Carey, one of the pioneers of 'experimental' music and sound, and also that we must be aware that it won't be all that long before all those who helped to make 20th century "Doctor Who" will no longer be with us in this coporeal realm of existence.

Tristram's funeral will be at Centennial Park, 11.30 am on Friday the 9th of May. It is public.

Tristram's funeral was good as far as these things go, with his own music and distinguished speakers. One,  Charles Bodman Rae pointed out his wife had been in Doctor Who (!) and checked Tristram's obit in The Independent as the best one.
