The Time Meddler was as pivotal as Three Doctors--I always think about some poor schmuck who wrote into the TV Radio Times after the first episode was broadcast "Since when does a medieval monk have a phonograph?"--and they printed it. Sigh. Anyway I'll plumb for Three.
I'm not that fond of Time Monster, and Time Warrior comes from good ol' season 11!

Without a doubt Tomb of the Cybermen wins. There are many famous scenes from that story, and the Cybermen showed true menace.
The Twin Dilmema was simply an appaling story and one of the worst Dr Who stories ever!
Whilst there were parts of The Two Doctors that were quite good, overall it was too messy and Robert Holmes was restricted by JNTs demands to have several elements in it.
So The Ultimate Foe gets my vote - I love all of the scenes in the Matrix, so weird. That was the best part of the whole Trial season for me. |

Twin vs Tomb gets my tip to be the single least even contest in this whole excersise!
I like Foe, and really like Holmes' ending with the Valeyard and the Doctor falling into the Matrix void forever...which is also what I don't like about it. So I'm going for Two Doctors, if no better reason than it was pretty much as written. And Colin's "Nevermore a butterfly." speach is the equivalent of Tom's soliloquy in Ark in Space.

The Unquiet Dead wins. A very moody piece which allowed the 9th Dr to use his wits, and was ably supported by Rose
Ive seen bits of the Underwater Menace, but wasnt overly impressed.
The Visitation does it for me. One of the more evenly handled Davison stories, and everything seemed to gel very well for once.
The War Games was too long at 10 episodes, even though it closed the 2nd Dr era. |

Underwater Menace shows just how trange season four was! It loses rather than Unquiet Dead winning! I've seen The War Games reviewed as "episodes one-nine" and "episode 10", as if they were differnt stories. The low key and more rewarding view per minute Visitation wins.

Definately The Web of Fear. The remaining episode Ive seen of it is fantastic - I can only imagine what the other parts must have been like. I hope the other episodes turn up one day.
Wheel in Space wins. The Web Planet was simply too slow and dull. Wheel was hardly perfect, but at least it didnt send me to sleep like Web Planet did!!! |

The War Machines was like a practice run for Web! Wheel has the single strangest piece of science in the entire show's run, but yes, works better than Web.
Getting close now...

Geez, what a choice! 2 duds both of them!
If I must choose, I'll go for Timeflight, as it at least had The Master in it.
Time and the Rani was simply the absolute worst!!!
I'll go for Underworld. Timelash was awful. Underworld at least attempted to do something different, by having most of the scenes done in CSO. Wasnt quite a success, but it had more going for it than Timelash.
Paul Darrow was even camper than his role as Avon in that one!!! |

This one's the Curate's Egg; Time Flight actually looks *good* in comparison...
Underworld's main problem was the lack of budget. Not the lack of plot!
It's the end...

Now it's a matter of getting a seond vote on these last four, it's time to reflect on some of our inconclusive bouts.
Enemy Within vs Enlightenment.
Jimmy's best/worst document makes his distaste for space going sailing ships and Linda Barron apparent. Enemy Within.
Image of the Fendahl vs Inferno.
Jimmy likes Inferno.
Revenge of the Cybermen vs Revelation of the Daleks.
Jimmy' bad list includes the last one. Revenge.
Robot vs Rose.
Jimmy don't like Robot.
The Brain of Morbius vs The Aztecs
Jimmy say Brain.
The Leisure Hive vs The Long Game.
Jimmy don't like Long Game.
The Macra Terror vs The Mark of the Rani.
Jimmy say Mark.
The Mysterious Planet vs The Mutants.
Jimmy don't like Mutants.
The Sea Devils vs The Seeds of Death.
Jimmy say Devils.
We are still deadlocked over the following, and require a tie breaker:
The Armageddon Factor vs The Awakening.
The Daleks' Master Plan vs The Dæmons.
The King's Demons vs The Krotons.
The Myth Makers vs The Pirate Planet.
The Two Doctors vs The Ultimate Foe. |

Vengeance on Varos for sure. That was one of the few Colin Baker stories that worked all the way thru, and had a potent message that was years ahead of its time. If only all of the 6th Dr stories were like that one...
Warriors of the Deep was actually pretty funny - Ingrid Pitt doing her karate kick was hilarious!
I like Warriors Gate and The Five Doctors both - both of them were important stories in their own ways. I'm making this one a tie, I cant decide. |

I quite like Vengence too, and Deep was almost as good. I'd go for the experimental but flawed Gate over the over crowded Five Doctors.
Now! Let's distill this down to the best ten, and if taste allows, worst! |
