Subject:  Time Travel;..Yeah,No,..Maybe,....

06/12/2006 00:35 GMT

I`ve not read about Quantum Leap on these pages.
This is the nearest that we primal apes have achieved regarding Time Travel.
Am I alone in thinking that this is a subject/series worth discussion ?
If Time travel is possible (in the real world) then might it not take the form of mentality rather than physicality ?
What are the latest scientific ideas for the real possibility of some kind of Time \"inter-action\"?

Ask Paul Davies! (He lectures at Adelaide Uni and is also a Dr wHo fan - and he writes a lot about this topic)

I used to be really into these ideas - but I've not read any of my cosmolgy books for about 5 years, and have seemed to forgot a lot of it.

From what I can remember, I think we need to capture the energy within a singularity, and develop a wormhole so that we can come out of the particle dispersion without being completely 'spaghettified'.
At least that's what they say in Dr Who, Event Horizon, and popular science/cosmology books written by Paul Davies, John Gribbin, John Wheeler and Stephen Hawking.

Considering the web-site this question was posted, I find it surprising to say the least that there is so little interest or opinion regarding how this phenomena might occur.
Surely, when watching something of interest, an individual or two must think to themselves, "how would I go about that"?
Does any one imagine or dream or speculate  or even guess about how such things might be ? Come on,let`s get creative !

There are so many different theories out there about time and if we could travel into the future (inwhich we in ever second) or to the past. But I think its like interstellar travel. Its alla pipe dream.

I can`t believe I read this remark on such a web site. As unimaginative as I am I still believe in the possibility of time travel in some form (as I say, not physically but perhaps otherwise) but to deny the possibility of stellar or galactic transportation seems limited indeed.
There were plenty of scientists pre-1960s who declared it would be impossible to reach the moon but they were proved wrong.
It may take longer, but the Naysayers who deny the possibility of FTL (faster than light) interstellar travel will, I believe, be illuminated upon the same stage with the same light. Have more faith, have imagination but above all,..Have A Go

Actually, time-travel is not only possible, but we do it every day.  Just because it's all in the same direction doesn't mean it isn't travel.

First we have to learn how to defeat the laws of gravity before we delve into the laws of time.

While we are at it, I suggest we make a run on the laws of speed as well.  I think light speed is too slow .....

Yeah, I love that line, along with "My name is,..not important"!
But I am serious here. I believe that it will be possible for time interaction; if not actually travel then maybe communication or influence (it may already be happening.)
Matter and energy have shown themselves to have startling properties at the quantum or nano level. Perhaps time behaves differently at these scales; it certainly does at increased rates of speed.
By the way, does a hatchling bird learn to walk before it can fly ?

My brother could walk before he could crawl.

But are you saying something like in the movie Frequency. and electric strom help two people talk to each other over time but not space.

Something like that, yes!
There seem to be certain conditions that not only allow but seem to impel, unbidden, communication across timelines. The most often cited condition seems to be emotion.
Perhaps in the not so distant future (a cliche which I don`t approve of) it might be possible to refine the conditions required to speak to the past. Let`s face it, the faster our contemporary technology evolves, the closer and more compatible it is with future technology.
Perhaps that will be the link.

Since people are slow on getting back to this one,....
I remember as a child hearing about some lad (16 ish) working in a tunnel who suddenly and for no reason saw a line of Roman soldiers, some on horses, marching from one wall of the tunnel thru the other.
Years later I watched a documentary about this same incident.
At the time the guy was ridiculed. Even his account of detail was dismissed as inaccurate. However, it turns out that the details he reported are now found by historians to be accurate in the extreme. The site turned out to be an old Roman road which, thru time and development, was below the current ground level and his description of armour and armament has since been verified as both Roman soldiers and Auxilliaries; something which at the time of his sighting was unknown to historians and only thru further historical and archaeological research was found to be accurate.
I find it difficult to believe that this guy could make a guess at something which was unknown at the time and invite ridicule; which was apparently forthcoming; only for his "guess" to be vindicated some thirty-forty years later.
Any guesses?

They could have been an echo from the past inwhich while going through the tunnel.

either that was a part time history studient on something he sould not have been.

i like the first option.

The second option seems intriguing enough! Dylan, The Beatles and God knows who else, wrote wonderful songs "under the influence".
Perhaps something like that can be a factor.
However, the first statement seems more of a logical possibility (if logic applies in these matters.) But unlike an echo, there often seems to be a certain amount of interaction in many of these kind of reports. I am not 100% sure but, I think the guy said a soldier or two suddenly looked his way as if they could actually see him in return. Nevertheless, there are many similar accounts of apparitions interacting with people.
Yes; I know this is very close to delving into the spirit world but this would be the closest type of temporal encounter.
Perhaps there is a connection,...?

Not really.
This is testimony from someone who was initially villified for reporting what he had seen. Sceptics and "experts" denounced him as either lunatic or sensation seeker. Only time proved his account of detail as being accurate.
Ghost-Busters, on the other hand, is a silly Hollywood film.
